Fandango Digital recently attended BrightonSEO again! While AI was discussed lightly at the last event, it was at the forefront of everyone’s mind at this event. The question is, will AI take over digital marketing jobs?

Probably not, especially looking at AI’s current capabilities. One quote from Rachel Pearson during her “TikTok for Search” talk stood out “Don’t outsource creativity to AI.” Incredibly poignant, and definitely worth remembering as the SEO landscape changes. The keynote on the second day discussed how AI will change SEO and how it’s more important than ever to stay on top of developing technology.

Below the Fandango Digital team discuss BrightonSEO April 2023 highlights.

TikTok for Search

Rachel Pearson’s talk discussed optimising content for search on TikTok. As this is where Gen Z is starting to search more and more. Having your brand on TikTok is great if you can fit the content requirements for this platform. If you’d like to discuss a content strategy for the social app, we can help!

Brand Voice is More Important than Ever

To combat AI, brand voice is a key tactic, Carlos Meza. Having a distinct brand voice across your website and social has always been important to marketing your brand. With AI writing content soon all copy with start sounding the same! Clearly defining your voice and sharing original content has never been more important. Content strategy is what we do at Fandango, let’s talk.

Cognitive Load

Emma Russell discussed cognitive load and how users expect to be presented with info. Using a great example, Emma explored how Google responds to certain queries with a numbered list and others with a short paragraph. Quantity matters too! Too much content makes it harder for people to pinpoint and derive information. This talk was a great reminder to present information clearly for users to digest and an interesting exploration into cognitive load for search.

Neuroscience for Search

Giulia Panozzo connected neuroscience and search with her talk. Taking a look into how we capture user attention and provide an emotional response. An interesting point she made was users have a greater reaction to emojis. Apparently, for some search queries, emojis are showing up which could be a new update to search. Giulia also explored familiarity heuristics which relates to the human behaviour of going with what we know. This is an important factor for online search as returning users are such an important metric to track. Giulia also advised to respond to customer concerns and negative reviews proactively as other users will pick up on these over positive experiences! This was a great talk.

First Day Keynote

The keynote at the end of the first was by the inspiring and funny Areej AbuAli, who took us through the many updates Google has engineered. It showed how much SEO changes and how staying on top of this can be fun and fulfilling. The future of SEO is bright!

Exploring the SERP Multiverse

Jon Earnshaw discussed SERP features and optimising for the SERP multiverse. One thing which was discussed was voice landscape, looking at different keywords people use when voice searching with devices. improving our understanding is important. Jon discussed competitor research and advised us to look back at 12 months ago to see who moved to see what they’re up to which can help your page appear on SERPs. This tip will come in extremely handy

Link Building

We would never miss a talk from Greg Gifford. His Fast and Furious references got us amped up to start doing some link-building outreach! Thank you to Bibi The Link Builder for the tips for writing outreach emails.

Reducing Carbon Footprint

Went to a really interesting talk at Brighton SEO, delivered by Nick Vines, about the Internet and its carbon footprint. Who would have known, if the Internet was a country, it would have the 5th biggest carbon footprint, behind China, the US, India and Russia. What can we do to reduce this? We can:
  • make our websites load faster
  • offset the carbon footprint by tree planting
  • find a green website hosting provider, these are run using renewable energy
Other tips included fewer downloads, reducing image size, and using simple fonts. These are all small changes but together, they build up towards a cleaner future.
Find out the carbon footprint of your website. Not to brag, but ours is pretty good. ????

Future-proofing SEO Strategy

In another talk, by Anthony Barone, we were told that according to the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), a whopping 79% of Marketers do not believe they have the skills to deliver digital marketing. Good news for us as a digital marketing agency, but not so helpful for the Marketers trying to fulfil their roles. If this is you, we can assist through outsourcing to us the jobs you can’t do, or we offer bespoke digital marketing training to give you the skills you need.

Karaoke

On Thursday night the team went to Oncrawls band karaoke at Concorde 2 and watched as SEOs performed their favourite songs. Unfortunately, the team wasn’t brave enough to get up on stage and perform but maybe next year!
