What’s the Point of Blogs

  • 13th July 2016
  • Blogging, Content Marketing

As Content Director for Fandango Digital, blogging often falls under my remit, and it is an area many people struggle with.  “Content is King” we are told by the marketing community, business coaches and “those in the know”.  Many an entrepreneur will lament at the mere phrase.  Creating content takes time, something most business owners lack.

What is content marketing, and why do we need it?

Content marketing is using words and images to attract and retain an audience, which in turn will hopefully become your consumers.  This content can come in a variety of forms, including things like infographics, videos, slide shows, social media posts, eBooks, free information and… blogs.  This aspect of marketing is not a hard sell technique, your content must be of value to the viewer, interesting and informative.

So why write a blog?

Blogs are a tool in the content marketing kit and are a must in your overall digital marketing strategy.  They are relatively quick and easy to put together compared to some of the other types of content (unless you are a graphic designer, photographer or video producer by trade!).  And with blogs, you are killing two birds with one stone; you are creating a piece of content marketing whilst at the same time putting fresh content onto your website.  And this is the really important bit, the fresh content.

Fresh content for SEO

Google loves fresh content, and it will help with SEO (search engine optimisation) on your website.  When Google visits your website, it checks to see if you have anything new on there.  If you do, it gets all excited and comes back to look at you again soon.  If you don’t, it might skip you next time round.  The idea is to get Google to visit your website as often as possible, so that it remembers to include you in the top results next time someone searches for the products, services or information your website offers.  If your competitors have regular fresh content added to their website, and you don’t, guess who Google’s going to favour?!  Blogs are a really easy way to achieve this and keep Google happy.

If you know you need a blog but simply don’t have the time to write it, contact us and we’ll do it for you.
